360 South American Adventure – Ecuador & Peru Written by: Lindford Lowe

Location: Mompiche, Ecuador

It’s the place I fell in love with and didn’t want to leave. Had only booked it for 3 nights, but ended up staying 8 days. A great community atmosphere here with great food served fresh from the sea everyday by an abundance of local fisherman. The waves were the best I’ve ever surfed! Partied all night at a local hippy rave.

Location: Quito, Ecuador

Great view from the place I stayed at. Quito is quite a crazy city. Similar to London as it has many different elements to it. Whether you want to culture, to relax, party or explore – it has it all.

Location: Machu Picchu, Peru

Machu Picchu was just incredible. It was a long journey to get there. 6 hours to the hydro-electric plant by bus, a 4 hour walk to the beautiful town of Aguas Calientes and then another 1-2 hour trek up the very steep mountain in which Machu Picchu is nested on top of. Awe-inspiring views and I got a facinating history lesson on the Incas that built and lived there from the 15th century.

Location: Arequipa, Peru

The main activity in Arequipa was exploring the monastery. Proper Game of Thrones style city within a city with views of the volcano as the backdrop. Spent a couple of hours trying to take in the huge amount of information on the history of this vast monastery and the nuns and priests that inhabited it over the years.

Location: Paracas, Peru

We went to a nearby island known as the “Poor man’s Gallapagos”. Saw some Penguins, Sea Lions and Birds which they harvest the poo from and sell it due to it being used as a extremely good fertiliser. This is apparently one of Peru’s major exports.

Location: Paracas, Peru

Spent 5 days here in a eco hostel. It had all been built recently and was basically a nice caravan park with palm trees, bamboo huts, hammocks, a man made lake with paddle boards, a cold tub and a friendly laid back atmosphere from the staff and people extending there travels by working there.
